On Monday, 29 March 2021, an official launch of four Japan-UN-Namibia trilateral cooperation projects with funding from the Government of Japan was held at the Office of the Prime Minister. The launching ceremony was officiated by H.E. Mr. HARADA Hideaki, Ambassador of Japan to Namibia, Rt. Hon. Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, Prime Minister of the Republic of Namibia, Mr. Sen Pang, UN Resident Coordinator to Namibia and Country Representatives of the related UN Agencies. The names of the four projects are as follows:
- Food and Nutrition Assistance to Vulnerable Households Affected by Covid-19, recurrent droughts and the Africa migratory locust invasion (WFP)
- Preventing and mitigating the impact of COVID-19 and overlapping emergencies on nutritional, leaning and health outcomes of vulnerable children in Namibia (UNICEF)
- Improvement of Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Services to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 (WHO)
- Strengthening Namibia food systems to recover from emergencies and disease-related shocks through the Build Back Better (BBB) programme (UNDP)
The Government of Japan availed assistance totaling 2.4 million USD, approximately 37 million NAD, to complement the notable on-going work being carried out by the Government of Namibia, in partnership with UN Agencies, in supporting the most vulnerable populations in regions where drought and Covid-19 have endangered the livelihood of entire communities.
During the ceremony, Ambassador Harada remarked, “I am confident that these tripartite projects, with the UN Agencies’ wealth of experience and expertise, will contribute to improving the Namibian people’s lives in this emergency situation.”
Mr. Sen Pang, UN Resident Coordinator to Namibia, remarked that the four projects “aim to not only augment protective measures but also build resilience so that the lives of those hardest hit by the pandemic are improved,” appreciating the cooperation of Japan and Namibia.
Rt. Hon. Kuugongelwa-Amadhila extended sincere gratitude to Japan for the “generous, timely and impactful support towards addressing the recurring disaster risk and health challenges in Namibia.”
